Here we'll talk about the benefits of each so you can have a better understanding of what the differences are. Such as the difference between RAW/LOG/FLAT footage and Documentary Edit.
What does RAW Footage mean?
As the name implies, it's the footage in its RAW state, with no edits; the entire clip, with it's shakiness, out of focuses, lack of color grading, in-camera audio, and most commonly, short clips between 10 to 90 seconds long each (with about 150 clips per camera of your event (fully dependent on the amount of coverage booked). Not to mention multiple similar clips to get the perfect shot in.
What is a Documentary Edit?
It's basically a LONG highlight video (usually between 30 to 60+ minutes long). For those that want to have as much footage from their wedding, but without the awkward, long, silent or slow moments of the day. Still having a good edited, cinematic, video in high quality that keeps them hooked.
*Actual length will vary based on the wedding package you choose*
There's often a misconception between RAW video compared to unedited video. Especially when comparing to RAW photos and edited photos. Video files normally take 4 to 10 times the storage space of photos and often can be misleading when you ask for RAW footage. In most cases, clients want a longer form "highlight" film of their events compared to the shorter and more view-friendly and shareable version, that most couples receive.

For my couples, RAW footage it's free....well almost. You just need to buy your own storage media + shipping costs. Delivered in a lower resolution (if you want it in 4K full resolution, you can purchase that for an extra cost). As mentioned above, this is in its "RAW" state at lower resolution, typically at 720p or 1080p separated between cameras used on that day.
To purchase "editing rights" = $1,000.00
Documentary Edit pricing will cost an additional $1,800.00 This cost isn't meant to be deterrent but additional editing and excess materials will take a significant amount of time to edit and compile into a longer "highlight" film. Price is constant no-matter the package you choose.
Hmmmm. Each couple has different expectations and priorities.
Here are some questions and facts that may help you decide which option fits your needs;
If you are NOT a computer geek or a video editor, you'll probably want everything in one single (Documentary Edit/ Long highlight film), instead of figuring out how to create a playlist with all the individual clips to watch all together seamlessly. Also dependent on the speed of your computer and if you have the right software to create a video. Just some things to think about.
Do you mind the flat color of RAW videos produced? Do you want the audio to be in good quality or you are good as is? Would you prefer 2.5+ hours of RAW footage or one edited 90 minute video? Do you have access to licensed music to put into your edit?
**Actual length will depend on amount of coverage**
Quick answer: Yes AND No
Since I provide RAW footage at no extra cost, I do not provide editing rights with the footage to keep my brand's quality. It is also exported at a lower resolution 1080p.
So you would be able to have the files for personal storage, but not to edit or ask an editor to do it for you (3rd party). At least, not legally. You'll need to sign a contract agreeing to these terms for you to receive the files and the "right" to edit the footage.
Also, the free RAW files, are delivered at a lower resolution due to storage space and transfer times. If you would like to have the personal editing option, I do offer the "editing rights" along the full resolution 4K files for an additional $1,000.00. This price includes a hard drive and shipping costs :)
